In the open division, the team of Tom Sivori, Matthew Lugo, Luke Becker, Louis Sivori, and Alex Steele finished one-half point behind Jesuit for the state championship. Senior Tom Sivori led the Cavaliers with three points and finished third place individually in the statewide competition. Matthew Lugo, also a senior, scored two and one-half points for De La Salle. Freshmen Luke Becker and Louis Sivori each scored two points for the Cavaliers, and eighth-grader Alex Steele finished out the Cavaliers’ scoring with one and one-half points.
Theresa Sivori, Jeremy Allen, Dalton Scallon, and Rose Doucet edged out Newman by one-half point to claim the under-1,000 state chess championship. Freshman Theresa Sivori and senior Jeremy Allen led the team with two and one-half points each. Freshman Dalton Scallon contributed two points to the team total, and sophomore Rose Doucet’s draw served as the difference-maker for De La Salle over the competition.
Earlier in the week the De La Salle chess team had traveled to Baton Rouge and played a tight match against the L.S.U. chess team, losing 3-2. Matthew Lugo and Alex Steele scored big wins in that match. Other team members who competed against L.S.U. were Tom Sivori, Luke Becker, and Louis Sivori.
