Office of the Principal
February, 2018
Dear Parents:
Happy February! We have many upcoming events in the month of February, and I sincerely hope that this letter helps keep you abreast of all that is happening at De La Salle. As always, please continually refer to our website and edline for information and calendar updates, and feel free to contact us via phone or email if you have questions.
ADDING TIME TO WEDNESDAY SCHEDULES
As you are surely aware, we have added time to four consecutive Wednesday schedules as a means of making up instructional time due to the weather-related school closures in January.
On the following Wednesdays, we will dismiss at 2:45 pm, rather than our usual 2:00 pm: January 31, February 7, February 21, and February 28. Thank you for your patience with these changes, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC LIBRARY CARDS FOR STUDENTS
We are working in conjunction with the Latter Branch of the New Orleans Public Library to provide library cards to all of our 8th through 11th graders. Students will be asked to fill in basic information (name, address, home phone, and birthdate) on a form, which we will then turn in to the library. We hope to provide students with their actual cards in April or May. The possession of the library card will allow students unlimited access to a number of scholarly websites and on-line periodicals and resources, which will facilitate research. If for some reason you have an issue with your child receiving this card, please contact me at [email protected].
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
This week, January 29th through February 2nd, is Catholic Schools Week. We ask you to remind your child of the blessing of a specifically Catholic education, and we introduce the school day each day this week with a special prayer to help remind us of this privilege during this special week.
PROGRESS REPORTS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2nd
Progress grades (a letter grade posted to edline at the mid-point of each quarter) will be posted by the end of this week. Again, although we send no hard copies of grades home, this grade will give you an idea of where your child stands in his or her courses at this point in the third quarter.
MARDI GRAS HOLIDAYS: NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS
School is closed all week for the Mardi Gras holidays, beginning on Monday, February 12th, through Friday, February 16th. School resumes on Monday, February 19th.
DE LA SALLE MARCHING BAND, CAVALETTES, AND CHEERLEADERS
Our Band, our Cavalettes, and our Cheerleaders will proudly represent De La Salle and our storied history in the following Mardi Gras parades: Caesar, Babylon, d’Etat, Thoth, and Rex. Come out and watch De La Salle lead on during these parades!
PARENT – TEACHER CONFERENCES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd, 4:00 – 7:00 PM
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 22nd. Teachers will be available during this block for individual conferences. We ask that you limit conferences to no more than eight minutes per teacher as based upon the length of the “line” outside the teacher’s classroom. We thank you in advance for your understanding in this regard.
DISTRICT LITERARY RALLY, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24th
Some of our most talented students will be representing De La Salle at the District Literary Rally on this particular Saturday. The highest achievers will qualify for State Rally in March. We wish these students great success in their academic efforts!
SOPHOMORE PRAYER BREAKFAST, SATURDAY, MARCH 17th
(EARLY NOTIFICATION)
ALL sophomores are required to attend the Sophomore Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, March 17th, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. This is a breakfast for every sophomore and his or her mother (or significant, adult female presence). Save-the-Date invitations will be mailed home next week. Dress is semi-formal for this event: shirt and tie for males, and dresses (or similar semi-formal attire) for females. Please refer any questions regarding this event to me at [email protected].
REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR, MARCH 21st AND 22nd
(EARLY NOTIFICATION)
Early reminder that you must register your returning student for the 2018-19 school year at De La Salle on Wednesday, March 21st, or Thursday, March 22nd, any time between 3:00-6:30 pm. I will remind you again and provide additional information in the March newsletter.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, the wrestling team, and the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are now moving to the conclusion of their seasons and jockeying for playoff positions. Baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field are quickly nearing their respective openers. Please come out and support the Cavs as they take to the field and the floor!
As always, we thank you for entrusting your children to us, and we look forward to an enjoyable and restful Mardi Gras break. Take care, and may God bless you and yours.
Sincerely,
Paul Kelly, ‘83
Principal
